Becoming a Zen Monk
Sogenji is a Buddhist temple nestled in the mountains of Maruyama near the port city of Okayama. During the four weeks at the temple, students become monks in the Zen tradition. Typically, the temple requires a one-year commitment, but Japan Study has arranged for our students to participate fully in the life of the temple for only one month. The only rule that is waived for our students is the shaving of the head!
Students say that their time at Sogenji was challenging, but extremely rewarding.
