Campus Highlights
Knox was founded in 1837. At Knox, students are encouraged to develop
their own majors and research projects; for example, students interested
in fine arts are encouraged to spend a full 10-week term studying
art or theater full-time.

Off-campus Opportunities
Waseda students can participate in two off-campus programs. Students
interested in these programs should contact the Japan Study office
at Waseda to confirm the availability of spaces.
Quick Start Language Programs designed to introduce students to
a new language. This innovative program combines classroom study
in grammar and culture with short periods of intensive study abroad.
Knox offers Quick Start programs in French, German and Spanish,
though not every language is offered in a Quick Start format every
year. (Please note: off-campus courses may have additional fees.)
Green Oaks Term, a residential interdisciplinary off-campus program
at Green Oaks, Knox's 760-acre field station. The program involves
a small group of students with majors in the sciences, social sciences
and humanities in the exploration of ecological, cultural and historical,
and aesthetic qualities of the landscape. Staffed by three faculty
from Anthropology and Sociology, Biology and English/Creative Writing,
students have an intensive, 10-week experience, including sharing
responsibility for cooking, cleaning and the stewardship of the
field station. The College offers the Green Oaks Term every second
or third year. Students participating in the program receive 3.5
credits.

Host Stay Programs
Waseda students live in campus dormitories. Knox Host Family Program
is designed to help international students cope with their new environment,
and attain some level of comfort and to introduce students to the
broader aspects of American life. The Program also gives interested
members of the Galesburg community a chance to meet and learn about
students from different cultures. You will meet your host parents
during the course of International Student Orientation.

Famous Alumni
- Abraham Lincoln (1860, honorary degree). During his successful
campaign for President, Lincoln received an honorary degree from
Knox College. It was the first honorary doctorate conferred by
Knox and Lincoln's first educational degree of any kind. Writing
to Lincoln shortly after the trustees' action, a Knox trustee
advises the President: “You will therefore consider yourself
a 'scholar' as well as a 'gentleman' and deport yourself accordingly...”
- Mikiso Hane, 1922-2003. Internationally renowned scholar of
