descendents now control one of the largest construction equipment
manufacturers in the world.
Takashi Komatsu, 1910, Chairman and Founder of Komatsu Ltd.
Mr. Komatsu came to Monmouth when Japan was beginning to emerge
from its long period of isolation and he was truly a powerful
figure. He was one of a handful of Japanese leaders who openly
opposed World War Two, and this caused him to fall into disrepute
in Japan. At war's end, he was one of the people first contacted
by U.S. occupation forces seeking assistance and advice as Japan
began its postwar reconstruction.
- James Stockdale, a Vice Admiral of the Navy and former democratic
vice-presidential candidate, attended Monmouth College.
- Makoto Tsuda, 1943 Noritake Ltd. Japan
Makoto Tsuda remained at Monmouth until he graduated in 1943 and
was then repatriated and entered the Japanese army. At the war’s
end, he became a senior officer at Noritake and was a key figure
in the company's expansion in the United States. He also was managing
director of the company's first offshore factory, built in Ireland.
